Fall has become a great time to fish for pike in Flathead Lake. Until recent years, pike weren’t present in Flathead Lake in numerous numbers. A non-native fish, they aren’t regarded as a true sport fish by the locals and are very predatory. The last couple falls have been great fishing off the shores of Flathead Lake as can be witnessed by the two pike caught the last two years by staff. Chase Averill caught a 46″, 31lb. monster this fall on a 10 weight flyrod and last fall our sous chef caught a 49″, 28 lb. dandy.

Guests that have visited Flathead Lake Lodge over the last 10 years have enjoyed riding through our 500 acre Elk Preserve. These magnificent animals are now 12 - 16 years old which is full maturity. Very rarely are you able to see such mature animals in the Wild. The herd is managed by Scott Plum, an employee at the Lodge for over 20 years. Scott is seen feeding in January since browse is very scarce this time of year. We will move the herd into a 20 acre pen in March when they start loosing their antlers.

Currently we are working on our 1961 Chriscraft, Mustang. The work entails painting the entire hull, all brightwork, decks and topside. The entire boat was completely renovated less then 10 years ago and has been a nice addition to the Ranch fleet. The Mustang can accommodate up to 35 people for our evening boat cruises or special events. This is a great way to experience the expanse of Flathead Lake and the surrounding mountains.

The newest additions to the Flathead Lake Lodge family are Dally and Daisy, 9 week old St. Bernard puppies. They seem to be very mellow and love all the new attention from the winter staff. Flip, our lovable St. Bernard, was diagnosed with bone cancer late last year and passed away in December, she will be sorely missed. We will post periodic pictures as the puppies grow and eat us out of house and home.

The lodge finished up the 2008 season on October 11th and we are busy closing the facility down for the winter months. The horses have been taken to winter pasture, cabins and lodges winterized and snowplows put on the trucks.
In our 63rd season we enjoyed sunshine and mild temperatures and an outstanding group of guests. 2008 was a great fishing season due to extremely high water levels all summer after a record snowpack. Glacier National Park had it’s latest opening in over 40 years but our guests enjoyed playing in over 6 feet of snow at Logans Pass in early July. Flathead Lake was once again a highlight for our guests who relish the clear blue waters and spectacular scenery from our lakeside location.
Thanks to all our guests for another memorable season and we look forward to 2009.

Flathead Lake Lodge and Western CPE have been partners in educational vacations for over the past 10 years. In early September the Lodge will once again welcome class attendees and their families. During the course of a week you can earn your CPE (continuing education for accountants) for an entire year. You’ll learn from the nation’s best instructors–renowned experts in their fields–the crucial information you need to be effective in your job and to expand your horizons. After spending a few hours in class, you’ll have the rest of the day and evening to play golf, ride horses, go kayaking, take a boat cruise, play tennis or just relax. During the week the ranch will host a barn dance, our Signature Steak-fry dinner, a family rodeo, and a beachfire with music and s’mores. www.westerncpe.com
