Here in northwest Montana, Flathead Lake Lodge sits on the shore of Flathead Lake. If you haven’t heard of Flathead Lake, it’s the largest natural freshwater lake in the West. And, it’s also our backyard. Our ranch’s 2,000 acres start at the shore of Flathead Lake and stretch into the Swan Mountains, providing dude ranch guests with plenty of things to do in Montana. When you stay with us, you can spend as much time on the lake as you’d like.

With that in mind, here are six things we love about Flathead Lake.

1. The color.

Flathead Lake is fed by snowmelt and glacial runoff from nearby mountains, with the Flathead River, Swan River and other streams feeding into it. There are several factors that contribute to the lake’s color, including low algae growth and clear/clean waters that come from the mountains and the watershed.

2. It’s always changing.

With 185 miles of shoreline and depths that reach 371 feet, the mood of Flathead Lake continually changes. There are days the waters will be calm, practically making you think you could walk across it, while there are other times when the wind kicks up and a storm rolls in, creating wild waves and whitecaps as far as the eye can see. No two days are the same on the lake.

3. Flathead Lake helps fruit grow along the shore.

Due to the size of the lake, Flathead Lake creates something called a “lake effect,” which is a microclimate that provides a longer growing season. To sum it up, the water temperatures help regulate the land temperatures, creating a welcoming environment for fruit – including Flathead cherries – to grow.

4. Its clean waters help preserve our boats.

At Flathead Lake Lodge, we have the privilege of owning the Questa, a sailboat built in 1928. Each summer, we launch it on the lake. The clear and clean waters help keep the boat in prime condition, as there are minimal pollutants to harm the structure.

5. It is calming.

We’re big believers that there are no bad days on Flathead Lake or at Flathead Lake Lodge. While every day wasn’t made for playing on the lake, we feel fortunate to see it from various places on the ranch.

6. The sunsets are beautiful.

There’s nothing quite like watching the sunset over Flathead Lake. Time seems to slow down when the sun is setting, dropping past the horizon and casting all sorts of colors over Montana’s landscapes.
